Baby Style and Smile – What is an appropriate baby shower gift?

Almost all baby shower gifts are appreciated as long as they are not offensive, embarrassing or insulting to the “mommy-to-be” or hostess. That fact alone should remove much of the anxiety associated with for the appropriate baby shower gift. An appropriate baby shower gift is a gift that is suitable for the particular person and the particular occasion. If you focus on usefulness and avoid offence your chance of finding the appropriate gift is very good.

History behind baby shower gifts

Some believe the baby shower gift giving goes as far back as the first baby shower. However, it is difficult to find a date when the first baby shower gift was given. Research indicates the “showering” of the “Mommy-to-be has been popular in many countries for hundreds of years. Many sources say the baby shower originated as far back as the late eighteen hundreds. These sources say it received its name from the “showering” of gifts on the mother-to-be.

In the beginning, the baby shower was a tea party given for the “Mommy-to-be” and only women would attend. These parties were normally given after the baby was born because pregnant women did not appear in public. The baby shower gift was very practical and handmade: article of clothing, blankets, and food items. Except for the silver given by the grandmother.

Originally the baby shower was given for the first baby of the “mommy-to-be.” Tradition has changed that to all babies since all are considered a miracles and deserve the same treatment as the first.

In recent years baby showers often occur before the baby is born. Because of the new technology the health and gender of the baby is not so much a mystery as before. So, showers are held early in preparation for the new baby’s arrival without the worry of buying an inappropriate baby shower gift.

What makes the baby shower gift appropriate

Knowing something about the family and what their needs are in regards to caring for the new arrival as well as their lifestyle will narrow down the search for the appropriate gift. The appropriate baby shower gift is one that will be appreciated, in keeping with the lifestyle of the parent, useful in caring for the baby immediately or in the future. If the parent has a baby shower registry, the choice of a gift can be make easier by simply choosing a gift on the list not purchased yet.

Age appropriate is normally a consideration when giving a gift to a child. However, for the baby shower it is appropriate to give gifts to be used at a later age or gift that will covers a wide age range. With , we recommend you go with three years old and under to avoid parts small enough for the baby to swallow.

Some gifts may fit the lifestyle of the parent more than others. For example: If the parent like hiking you might consider a carriage that is convenient for taking baby on hikes or if the parent is a runner you might consider a jogging stroller.

Following these few simple rules will make you a hit at any baby shower.

Some things to consider when choosing a baby shower gift

At the start only women were invited to baby showers, but today these celebrations can include father, grandfather, and any male family members. Therefore, any one can find themselves shopping for the appropriate baby shower gift.

Historically, the grandparent would give a gift of silver as a small amount of inheritance for the child. Some grandparent still give the gift of silver today. Others grandparent have expanded the idea of a inherence to include saving accounts, saving bonds and stock certificates. In some places it is still traditional for the grandmother to make a baby blanket or small quilt for the baby. These are still appropriate baby shower gifts.

Most of the times those invited to the baby shower will not be grandparent and will be looking for other appropriate gifts. Understanding the appropriate gift is suitable for the particular person and the particular occasion, is usefulness and does not offend, you will find the following meet the requirement as appropriate baby shower gifts:

1. Any item from the baby shower gift registry not already purchased. You don’t have to get the item from the selected store.

2. Disposable Diapers and baby wipes- Diapers are expensive, and babies use them quickly, so new parents always appreciate a gift of diapers.

3. Baby Clothes-Baby clothes in larger sizes will likely be used more. If you don’t know the baby’s gender, a gift certificate is a welcome baby shower gift, allowing the parents to choose an outfit after baby arrives.

4. Books and DVD – Buying Books, DVDs and Music-Help boost baby’s brainpower by choosing a classic baby book, educational DVD.

5. Baby Toys – You can buy baby toys made for older babies for use later in baby’s life, but stick with toys for ages 3 and under to avoid the possibility of the baby choaking on the small parts. Your gift can be used for a longer time if its for a wider age range.

6. Lifestyle Gifts for Parents and Babies — If you want to give a baby shower gift that’s out of the ordinary, consider the parents’ lifestyle. (Ex. Joggers, Bikers).

7. Gift Baskets – Gift baskets make a wonderful keepsake gift and contains many of the essentials necessary for the new bundle of joy.

8. Baby Blankets – Infants quickly become attached to their security baby blankets. It will bring much joy to your baby.

9. Gift Certificates- For busy new parents, gift certificates can make it easy to pick up last-minute items that were forgotten in the preparations for baby’s arrival. Gift certificates also give parents-to-be a way to purchase a special item that they really wanted but didn’t receive at the baby shower. Baby shower gift certificates don’t have to be just for baby products, either. New parents might enjoy gift certificates for dinner delivery, movie rentals, house cleaning, massage, day spas or cloth diaper service. (Ex. gift certificates online).

Don’t offend or embarrass the new mom or the hostess and most any gift will be appreciated. To be thoughtful and give what is needed or what the parent wants most, follow the guidelines in this article. Selecting what the parent will appreciate and need is the secret to successful baby shower giving.

Rockabye Baby! Lullaby Renditions of The Beatles

No one will be able to say for sure whether Lullaby Renditions of the Beatles will successfully “glide your little one across the universe, through an octopus’s garden, and send them into a slumberland of strawberry fields,” as it says it will on the back on the disc, but one thing it won’t do is bonk you over the head with the sub-par production you might expect from a novelty disc. Disney Baby Lullaby: Favorite Sleepytime Songs for Baby and You

Lullabies lend themselves to woozy re-creations, a sort of endless repetition that flags under the weight of the concept (putting to bed for their much-needed sleep) and the lack of weight accorded to the music. Baby Shower Games

Baby Shower Games
Baby Shower Games

Baby Style and Smile knows how to play games!

, Games, and Games

Bingo

Your guests will have a blast playing BINGO while the mommy-to-be opens her presents.

Directions: When mommy opens a gift, the guest check their Baby BINGO card for the item. If you have the item, place a small diaper pin (or whatever you have to use) on that item. When you get a Baby BINGO you must yell “Baby BINGO”. If you just yell BINGO, you must take off one of your diaper pins on your Baby Bingo. Then continue playing. Whoever gets a Baby Bingo first wins.

Celebrity Baby Match

Who doesn’t love some celebrity gossip? This will be a hit at the baby shower.

Directions: Match the baby name with the correct celebrity parents (Maddox to Angelina Jolie, for example). The first person to correctly finish the list wins.

Unscramble the Words

Challenge your guests to unscramble words that have to do with childbirth and babies.

Directions: The first to correctly unscramble or the person who correctly unscramble the most within a time limit wins. (ex: sitbenas is bassinet and peidar is diaper).

Mommy-to-be Pregnancy Trivia

This is supposed to be all about Mommy and her pregnancy. Let’s test everyone to see who has been the best friend or family member.

Directions: Make a list of questions about the mom’s pregnancy. Ask the guest the questions first and have them write their answers down. Then ask the mom-to-be the questions and as she answers everyone can check their answers. Whoever gets the most right wins. (ex. When did you find out you were pregnant?)

Guess the Girth

Now don’t be shy. It’s time to guess momma’s size. This is a baby shower game favorite.

Directions: Ask guests to cut a length of string that they think will stretch around the future mom’s belly. After everyone has had a turn, the mother-to-be measures and cuts a string that fits her belly. Compare her string to the pieces of string from each guest. The person who is closest wins. You’ll be amazed at what people’s estimates are. It’s a great icebreaker and always good for some laughs.

Some People Never Change

Guess the characteristics of the parents-to-be when they were babies.

Directions: Ask the grandparents to write down what the parents were like as babies (ex. time of birth, height, weight, first tooth, first smile, age when toilet-trained, and early signs of their personality. Based on that information, make up a mommy or daddy quiz. The person with the most correct answers wins a prize.

My Water Broke

Just sit back and wait.

Directions: The day before the shower, freeze diaper pins, miniature pacifiers, or similar items in ice cube trays. Give each guest an ice cube in a glass of water or other drink. The first person whose ice melts so that the item floats freely shouts, “My water broke!” and wins the game.

Dress the Baby

Who doesn’t love to play house?

Directions: Get a life-size baby doll, receiving blanket, cloth diaper, diaper wrap, and onesie. Guests take turns trying dressing the baby. Time each guest — the one who does it fastest wins.

Diaper Bag Memory Game

One of those memory games you add onto the list until it becomes too long to remember.

Directions: The first player starts by saying the name of an item that would normally be found in a diaper bag. The second player lists that item plus one of their own. Each subsequent person must list everything already mentioned, in the proper order, and then add one more item. If you forget an item or list them out of order, you’re “out.” The last person still in the game is the winner.

Guess the Baby Food

Sweet Potatoes, Green Beans, Peaches, and more.

Directions: Buy six to eight jars of baby food, all different flavors, and enough plastic spoons for all of the guests. Remove the labels from the jars and number them. At the shower, have everyone taste each jar and write down what kind of food they think it is, without letting fellow guests see their answers. Whoever gets the most right wins a prize.

Don’t Say “Baby”

Imaging a bunch of women at a baby shower, this can be hard.

Directions: Give every guest a clothespin to attach to her clothing and wear during the shower. Tell everyone not to say the word “baby” for the rest of the shower. If someone hears another guest say the forbidden word, she gets to take the other guest’s clothespin(s). Whoever has the most clothespins at the end of the shower wins.

Baby Animal

Animals have babies too.

Directions: Write a list of animals and each guest writes down the baby name of that animal. (ex. Bear is Cub, Cow is Calf) Whoever gets the most right wins.

Fill in the Song and Name the Song

Old Mother Hubbard, Humpty Dumpy, or Cat and the Fiddle.

Directions: Write part of the lyric or play part of the song and the guest fill in the missing lyrics and song title.

PRIZE SUGGESTIONS: Lotions, candles, frames, books, plants, items for the kitchen, small photo albums, chocolates, and gift certificates for coffee.

Does anyone have any creative ideas for baby shower games?

Hello!
Im hosting a baby shower in the next week, and was wondering if anyone has any good ideas for baby shower games. The mom has already had the baby.. ( a girl ) and I was looking for some creative games or activities. The baby shower will be held indoors due to poor weather. Also if anyone has any cool recipe ideas that would be appreciated aswell. Thanx! =)

I have a HUGE family and it seems like i attend at-least 2 baby showers a year lol but some of the games we found fun was the baby diaper game where u put different baby foods (some people use melted candy bars) into different diapers marked with a marker 1-however many different kinds of food (or candy) u have, and then u pass them around the room, each person gets a popsicle stick, they can smell, look, or even use their own popsicle stick to taste, and the person who can identify the most foods (or candy) correctly wins, its really funny to watch everyone sniff and examine the diapers depending on the crowd your entertaining, this could be fun, if your crowd is more “uptight” then u could go with a less “gross” game such as the then and now game, where you get a baby and a present picture of different family and friends and you copy the pictures (so you don’t ruin the original and can return it if need be) and put them on a poster board all scrambled up, then the guests have to determine which baby pictures are which person, or you can do the same thing just with mother and baby where you get the baby pictures and a picture of the mom and they identify which baby belongs to which parent, when using the mother and baby pictures it may take longer because u can have 2 or more different baby’s that could belong to the same mother, anyways the person to correctly identify the most matches wins. I’m not sure if either of these games are games that you or your crowd would enjoy but i personally found both to be entertaining.
