What To Do About A Toddler Biting And Kicking
Nearly every child goes through this habit during their first years, but the extent varies from child to child. If you have a child that has bitten on occasion, it does not necessarily mean they should be classified as a ‘biter’. Studies show that approximately fifty percent of children in day care have been bitten around three times in a year, which shows that biting in toddlers is a very common occurrence.
The first stage of biting is when your baby’s teeth begin to show. The child will need to bite to soothe the discomfort they are feeling from the teeth pushing through their gums. Most of the time this biting is done on a teething ring, but if that’s not available your baby will find the nearest suitable replacement! If your baby tries to bite when you are breastfeeding him or her, detach your child and put them down in a safe spot. Over time, this will condition your child to understand that biting equals a negative response from the mother and the baby will learn to stop biting.
When your toddler is one is around the time they will begin experimenting with biting again. This may simply be to show some excitement, but you must respond each time with a firm response to ensure that the biting stops.
Biting may start again around the age of two and this time it is probably to try and show their independence, but again, you need to have a firm response and also ensure the child understands that it is painful for the recipient. Perhaps your child needs further teaching in basic communication skills to try and bring the biting to a halt.
